The Principality of Monaco has positioned itself as the international capital of advanced yachting sustainability. Through the joint leadership of H.S.H. Prince Albert II and the Yacht Club de Monaco (YCM), the industry is transitioning rapidly from heavy marine gas oil (MGO) to synthetic e-fuels, bio-methanol, and hydrogen fuel-cell hybrid power plants.
Understanding the SEA Index Benchmark
Launched in 2020 by the Yacht Club de Monaco in collaboration with Credit Suisse, the Superyacht Eco Association (SEA) Index evaluates the carbon intensity of vessels over 40 meters. It generates a transparent 1-to-5 star rating based on:
- Grams of CO2 emitted per gross ton per nautical mile at cruising speed.
- Auxiliary generator power demand during anchor mode (hotel load).
- Installation of kinetic heat recovery units and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery banks.
Vessels achieving 4 or 5 stars receive priority berth allocation in Port Hercule and reduced port tariff incentives.
Bio-Methanol & Hydrogen Fuel Cell Systems
Bio-methanol produced from renewable municipal biomethane or captured CO2 and green hydrogen is emerging as the preferred liquid fuel for custom newbuild megayachts above 70 meters. When paired with proton-exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells, bio-methanol reformers allow zero-emission hotel load operations in sensitive marine sanctuaries such as the Pelagos Sanctuary surrounding Monaco.
Future Bunkering Infrastructure in Monaco
The Monegasque port authorities have initiated bunkering infrastructure upgrades along the Luccioni outer breakwater. By late 2026, mobile cryogenic hydrogen fuel trailers and Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO100) bunkering stations will be permanently available for visiting yachts.
